My Skin Secret

In junior high and most of high school I was blessed with pretty clear skin. The occasional breakout but that was about it. Then the end of my senior year hit and my skin just kind of exploded. It was a real blow to my self esteem and I knew it was bad when my mom was the one that suggested I go to the dermatologist - not me. The dermatologist gave me some antibiotics and some Differin gel to apply every night and both really helped for a year or so. After that my skin regularly went through its crappy phases like anyone else but stayed pretty consistent and I could control it because I knew what to expect. However, for the past few months my skin has been especially bad.

Because of how bad my skin got (so quickly) in high school and how many people took notice, my skin became a big source (thankfully its usually the only source) of negative self esteem. Even though my skin could be much worse when I get into a 'breakout cycle' it tends to negatively affect the way I view myself which is something (negativity) I try to avoid in general. Because of all this and (obviously) wanting pretty, clear skin I began researching the issues and implementing small changes. I was ready for change!

First, I was breaking out along my chin. Research told me it was most likely hormonal and related to my birth control. Partly out of laziness, partly out of cost but mostly because I was raised this way, I avoid going to the doctor whenever I can so I really wanted to see if there was anything else I could do before switching my BC method. Further research told me that some people react to the hormones in cows milk by breaking out so I decided to test that theory out.(*its a very interesting topic so look it up if random research is your idea of a good time like it is mine*) After paying attention to my eating habits for a week or so I realized I consumed a fair amount of cows milk, so I decided to cut it out for a few weeks and was happy with the results. Now Ammon and I only drink almond milk and it's pretty comparable as long as you don't drink a glass of it by itself which I never did with cows milk anyway.

Although eliminating the cows milk helped it didn't entirely eliminate the problem so I started evaluating my skin care routine. For years I have used St.Ives Apricot Scrub and I've loved it. However, I've been told by estheticians and others that the scrub can actually cause micro cuts on the skin's surface further exacerbating acne by spreading around bacteria. In the past this scrub did wonders but it seemed to be irritating my skin lately so I switched to a more gentle daily scrub. Again (yay!), this really helped and I was pleased with the results.

But once again my skin began to act up and I started to get really bad breakouts but kind of just all over this time. Then I realized that I'd forgotten to pick up some more of my 'secret weapon' after I'd run out. Honestly, I didn't really think it was doing that much for my skin so I just didn't get any more because it's pretty expensive. But I decided to try it out again since I'd heard such wonderful things about it and hoped that it would really work this time. Lo and behold, it worked. I give you... Cod Liver Oil and I'm dead serious. This is the brand I use and it's really given me awesome results :)

I first heard about this stuff from makeup artist kandeej.com. She touted it as her secret weapon so I decided to give it a shot but it wasn't until now (a couple years later) that I noticed it's full amazing-ness (great word right?). Now, be aware that a bottle of this stuff from Whole Foods is about $25 but if you have problem skin I'd definitely give it a try (just take a swig - somewhere between a tsp and TB - once a day) in conjunction with an appropriate skin care routine. It really has helped balance out my skin and lowered the number of break outs I've been getting and I've only been using it again for 2 weeks!

I think my skin is in a transitional phase (kind of growing out of my teenager hormones, issues, etc and into my 'adulthood' issues) which is why completely random things seem to irritate it when they haven't before. But this stuff, along with reevaluating my skin care routine and other triggers, has really seemed to help everything kind of calm down and balance itself out.

Let me know if you try it, if you have tried it or if you have any secret skin weapons of your own!

Chrismas List

I am hesitant to post a list of 'wants' because I've always been taught that Christmas is about so much more. But Ammon has been asking what I want so I decided to give him an easy go to list :) And its fun!

Black Silk/Satin Robe

Camera.
I've been devastated that I've missed documenting our first years together because my camera broke and I haven't gotten another one.

Final Thankfuls Post

Day #23

I'm thankful for Friday nights in. Staying home with Ammon (or by myself) is like having my batteries recharged. I enjoy cleaning (corny I know but I cleaned the bathtub and seeing that shiny white tub is wonderful), reading (just finished The Shining - awesome and the movie does not do the book any sort of justice), watching documentaries with Ammon, watching true crime tv shows (without Ammon lol), playing with Athena, walking Athena, taking naps.

Day #24

Naps. They are one of my guilty pleasures. On saturday I woke up, cooked Ammon breakfast before he went to work, couponed a bit, then took a 2 hour nap. I just love being able to do that one day a week!

Day #25

Good Blogs. They inspire me, give me great ideas, de-stress me, make me laugh, make me cry, motivate me.

Day #26

Cooking Skills. I really am grateful that I can cook & bake. We save so much money when we eat at home. We know this because we used to eat out SO much. After moving in together and realizing how much money we were really spending we made a commitment to cook our meals at home. Now we only go out to eat every once in a while - usually for special occasions.

Day #27

Our health. I am very grateful that Ammon and I are relatively healthy people. Even when we get sick we're usually don't have to go to the doctor or miss work. And even more awesome is the last time I was very sick it happened over the weekend!

Day #28

Friends. Old and new. They make life fun. They give me confidence and love. They are always there for me. They have changed me for the better.

Day #29

School. I took this semester off and I'm to the stage of missing school. Not necessarily the homework but definitely the 'expanding me mind' part. We're so lucky and blessed to live in a country where women (of all ages, races, economic statuses, etc) get to go to school for whatever they want!

Day #30

Ammon. Again... But I couldn't not post it as my last thankful because Friday we celebrated out 2 year anniversary. I am so thankful for him in so many ways. Thank you for 2 great years babe! And I look forward to many more :)

Love,

Kxoxo

Thanksgiving Weekend

Day #22 (Let's kill 2 birds with 1 stone - but not really kill them because that's mean and makes me sad)

I'm thankful for Thanksgiving of course! Or the holidays to be more general and specific at the same time... I love that we have 3 or 4 holidays right in a row that bring our families closer together :)

For Thanksgiving Day Ammon and I went up to his Dad and Step-Mom's house for an amazing traditional Thanksgiving dinner (including lamb - so good!). Like I've said before I love getting together with Ammon's family and this time was no different. It was so nice to see all of his siblings (the guy grew up with 2 brothers, 2 step brothers on his dad's side & 4 step brothers on his mom's side - crazy!) as well as Dad & Jeanie. It was really nice to see Rob (Ammon's step bro) who I haven't seen since the first month Ammon and I were dating almost two years ago and baby Maelin (!!!). Let me tell you Jon and Emily make adorable babies and Maelin is so beautiful :) I may be just a little biased since Iley has red hair and is adorable but oh well! It was so nice to just visit, eat and hang out. Watching Riley and Iley play with each other was adorable. We also discovered that Riley has a random but incredible throwing arm for a football and that Iley throws like a girl (go figure - you go girl!). I also made some rolls (I've been really into baking lately) which everyone said turned out really good. I was so glad because cooking for people besides Ammon makes me so. freaking. nervous. And the fact that we blasted the heater on our way there so they could rise didn't help my nerves either!

After a few hours with Ammon's family we went to Bountiful to visit my family at my aunt and uncle's. We were hoping my sweet Joshy cousin would be reading his mission call but no dice :( We visited for a while and I ate a nice big piece of delicious cheesecake (my family knows me so well). Our past few Thanksgivings as a family have been really fun as we've all gotten older (Mariah has gotten married, Josh has graduated, Mike is getting ready to graduate, Chris is in Jr. High - holy cow!). We also really like to play poker as a family - I need to remember to have everyone play on Christmas! And it was so fun to have Mike (we have so many freaking Mike's in our family it's ridiculous) and his kids over. This Mike is my Uncle Joe's oldest friend (like since Jr. High) and I've known him my whole life. My family is a hoot (in a good way) and we had a lot of fun. Unfortunately we couldn't stay long because Ammon had to work 2 shifts for Black Friday starting at 11 pm - yucky :(

Black Friday I don't go shopping. Call me crazy but it's not worth it to me so I had a nice relaxing day with Athena. That night I drove out to Farmington to visit my Dad and Step-Mom. They took me and Ammon out to dinner at Texas Roadhouse. I was so excited to see them :) I love when I get to visit with my Dad and Dana because they are my only relatives that live far away so I miss them lots. However, I'm grateful that it isn't super far so we get to see each other every couple of months. I also love and am grateful for the relationship that we are all growing. Being with my Dad makes me see just how alike we are and how much him and Ammon get along. We also got our Christmas present from them this weekend. A very nice cast iron casserole dish/stove top pot in lime green. I am so excited to use it! And it was just what we needed since we're pretty low on kitchen necessities but we cook a bunch.

Saturday we all got together again (Dad, Dana, Ammon, Mariah & me) for dinner downtown at Takashi, our favorite sushi place. We had a lot of fun and my dad just cracks me up. I was kind of tired and cranky and he reacted exactly the way Ammon did with me earlier in the day lol. The sushi we all shared was amazing and the Pink Something cocktail I had was delish as well. My Dad and Dana are so generous when they take us out and it really makes us feel so loved and special. We're very grateful for the distance they drive, the time they put into spending with us, the money they spend on dinner, etc and most of all their love and support. I'm very excited to go down and visit them in the next couple months :)

All in all we had a great Thanksgiving weekend/holiday even though we were pretty pooped out by Sunday. In three days we drove from Murray to Park City, Park City to Bountiful, Bountiful to Murray, Murray to Farmington, Farmington to Bountiful, Bountiful back to Farmington, Farmington to Murray, Murray to Farmington, Farmington to SLC, SLC to Centerville, Centerville to Farmington and finally Farmington to Murray. Holy Cow Babies.

I hope everyone's Turkey Day was filled with as much love, gratitude, food and family as ours :)

Love,

Kxoxo

Thankful & Grateful

Day #17:

On Saturday I was grateful for Kelsey! We had a fun time just catching up (yes, we have lots to catch up on after not seeing each other for 2 weeks) and eating at Mimi's Cafe (the chocolate mousse was freaking       a-maz-ing). I'm so lucky and thankful to have such an awesome best friend. She is always there for me, no questions asked, and she accepts me in a way not many people can or do. :D And I can completely be myself around her and she understands!

Day #18:

My 'second family': The Bakers :D Ammon has an amazing family and I've never dated a guy with a family I feel so comfortable with and accepted by. They truly are hilarious, hard working, accepting and loving people. I'm so grateful I fell in love with a man that has a great support system behind him (and behind me now).

Day #19:

My mama! What can I say? She's my mother :) She's always been the most important person in my life. She has taught me almost everything I know and value. Her patience and sacrifice are immeasurable and her love even more. She put her needs and wants aside and worked full time + so Mariah and I could have all the things/experiences any child with 2 parents had. She encouraged & supported me through my dance. She taught me about unconditional love. She taught me to believe in myself and feelings/instincts and to trust myself. Thanks mom :) I love you

Day #20:

Books. Specifically Stephen King right now. I just love the momentary escape they bring while still being very conscious and aware of what you're reading. I've missed reading (I haven't for various reasons) but am loving it just as much as I used to. Also, Stephen King is just such an eloquent writer. He isn't one of those 'hard reads', you know the kind you sometimes read in school or the ones you really have to concentrate on. He isn't an 'easy read' either, the kind you just skim through -half aware. He is this awesome blend of both. Intelligent, intriguing, deep, awesome character development, etc.

Day #21:

My dad and step mom. We (me, Mariah, Mike, Ammon & our dogs) are always welcome at their house and greeted with open arms. They are also always willing to come down and visit us (its a 3 to 4 hour drive from southern Utah). Whenever they come up we go to dinner, hang out, play games, talk, etc. Whenever we go down we go to dinner, my step mom Dana cooks awesome meals, we play super fun games, go fishing, take the dogs on walks, ride 4 wheelers, feed the cows, visit the brand new baby calves, etc. I love that whenever we spend time together its quality time, not just going through the motions and spending any time together. We have all gotten close over the past year or two and I couldn't be happier about it. I love them with all of my heart and I'm very lucky, grateful and blessed to have them.

Love,

Kxoxo

PS: Tomorrow is Turkey Day! We get to spend the morning at the annual Turkey Bowl (soccer of course) - I love soccer games and spending the time cheering Ammon & the other guys on and visiting/messing around/having a beer or two with the WAGs. Then we head off to Ammon's Dad and Step Mom's for early Thanksgiving dinner (Ed's amazing lamb is on the menu - be jealous). After that we head to my Aunt and Uncle's for late Thanksgiving dinner (my sweet, awesome, handsome, grown up, little cousin Joshy is going to read his mission call! Ah! Yay!). Hope your's is equally as awesome :)

Thanksgiving Thankfuls!

Day #14:

I'm thankful for relaxing nights with Ammon where we just get to do nothing together. Together is the key word. Especially with the holidays rolling in Ammon works A LOT more than usual so getting a whole Wednesday night with him was/is so wonderful and recharging for us as a couple :)

Day #15:

Today (thinking back on last night) I'm thankful for my sense of self awareness. Even though I don't associate myself with the LDS church anymore it still taught me so much about spirituality and self. I'm also grateful for my mom and the faith/trust she puts in me when I have a dilemma. i.e. I was having a dilemma recently and was kind of freaking out (as I tend to do) not knowing which decision to make. She just calmly said, 'listen to your heart/gut and pray about it'. That's it. After still freaking out for a couple days I realized that she (of course - she is a mom after all) was totally right. I had the answer within me all along and once I decided to go along with the way I felt I was at peace again. So whatever you would like to call it: self awareness, the spirit, God, Buddha, indigestion, intuition, etc I am very grateful for it and the peace it brings me.

Day #16:

Now today, specifically, I am grateful for my job. I know that sometimes I can get overwhelmed with the responsibility of it or the mundaneness (apparently that isn't a word but I'm using it anyway) aka sitting at a desk all day but when I really take it all in... I'm extremely lucky to be where I am. I have a job with great people I truly enjoy working with; good benefits (at my age!); Saturdays, Sundays and paid holidays off; and it allows me to go to night school afterwards. I'll say it again: I am extremely lucky.

Love,

Kxoxo

PS- Today I am also thankful for Buffalo Wild Wings giving away free sit down meals on their 'practice before opening night' Friday. I am also thankful for Syd being sweet enough to snatch one for me! And that Kels Jan agreed to join me! Have a wonderful weekend :)

November Grateful Game #3

Day #10:

Saturday I was super grateful for my sweet nieces, nephew, sister-friend & their daddy/husband :) I got to spend Friday night playing and visiting with them all and they just make me so gosh darn happy! Holly and I have been best friends (but really its more than that - which is why I consider her my sister-friend) since I was 8 and she was 12 and we just 'clicked'. I'm grateful that they give me a 100% guaranteed reason to be happy all the time :)

Day #11:

Sunday was Veteran's Day. I am so proud and grateful to have a man who dedicated 9 years of his life (enlisting right after such a scary time - 9/11) to the military. I am grateful to all of the men, women & their families who go through the rigors of being a part of our country's armed forces. And now after knowing multiple people in that situation I will never take them, their families or their service for granted. (And thank you Olive Garden for giving Ammon a free Veteran's Day meal so we could have a much needed date night lol)

Day #12:

Mariah! I'm so blessed to have such an amazing sister :) She has such a sweet heart and soul within her and she just brightens up my day when I get to see her! I'm also very lucky that she invites Athena to her work (doggy daycare) on some of the days that I work so Athena isn't home alone (helps out so so much!). And I am SO grateful that my very best friend is my sister - there is no bond or relationship like it :) I know for a fact (no doubt about it) that we were meant to be sisters in this life together and I'm so happy someone up there got it right.

Day #13:

I'm thankful for nice strangers. On Monday (after my car froze solid over the storm this weekend because I didn't drive it at all lol) I was attempting to scrape my car clean with a broom - laugh all you want! As I was scraping this nice guy in our apartment complex offered to run inside and grab his scraper for me. He could have just ignored me and gone on enjoying his cigarette, etc but he was willing to go the extra mile at 8AM to help out a girl in a pickle (a pickle that was her own silly fault). So thank you nice guy with the ice scraper, people like you really make this sometimes dreary world a whole lot brighter.

Love,

Kxoxo
